Chapter 16 – IP Addresses Of Essay Commenters (or, The Spy Among Us)

@gottiewrites 30/08/14

My latest chapter has been officially paused, because your recent comments have made me aware that Rob’s online behaviour seems to be slightly suspicious. I’ve realised that I should be taking this all more seriously. I’m currently working on tracking down more information on the HelpMePay data. I’m going to be contacting the authorities if I find anything truly concerning.

In the meantime, to record everything that’s happening in case this essay is important later, last night I made a note of all anonymous commenters’ IP addresses.

While I was making back-ups of all of my comments, I realised that I could use the IP addresses to work out where my anonyrat lives. The one who sent me the cease and desist letter back in chapter 7. I looked up the location, and it turns out they’re in LA.

Not just LA, actually. The IP address is registered to a familiar location. Rob and Nathan’s house.

Which means . . .

Hi, Rob? Thanks for the comments. I hope you’re enjoying the essay.

Now, as far as I’m concerned, this isn’t too much of a surprise. I knew already that he’s reading this essay. He stole my laptop, after all. The first anonyrat comment was posted the day after someone told Rob about this essay at ComicCon.

He’s fluent in fan culture from his LiveJournal days. We also know that he thrives on attention, so it’s not really shocking that he decided to check out a thesis written all about him.

Just to remind you, here’s the first comment my anonyrat left:1

Anonymous To the owner of ‘gottiewrites’-

We are writing on behalf of RBC, who have filed for a permanent injunction against your website for unsubstantiated claims about the cast members of their TV show Loch & Ness. If the account and all associated uploads aren’t deleted within 48 hours, you will be liable for prosecution on grounds of libel and slander.

Please confirm within ten business days that you agree to comply with our request, or further action will be taken. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter. Though we recognise your enthusiasm for the TV show and associated cast members, we ask that you respect our desire to protect the integrity of our client’s intellectual property rights.

Yours sincerely,

Marcus Feinstein

This makes sense, too – he was trying to stop me posting about @silentwakes. The @silentwakes LiveJournal account was deleted the very same day that comment was posted here, as spotted by one of my hawk-eyed readers, so he must have taken it down the second that he realised I was writing about it, then tried to silence me with a legal threat.

When I proved that the lawyer’s letter wasn’t real, and continued to post the essay even though the @silentwakes account had been taken offline, he somehow tracked down my address and broke into my house instead and stole my laptop.

If you guys still need evidence that I’m telling the truth here, I don’t think you’re going to get much better than this. You can corroborate all of this for yourself – you can find the IP addresses of the comments above, and Rob’s home address has been posted in the comments several times by now.

Rob is literally here right now, commenting on everything I do. Everything I’ve told you is the truth. Please stop attacking me in the comments, both here and on that awful reddit conspiracy theory thread. It’s cyberbullying, and I shouldn’t have to put up with it.

I. Am. Not. Lying. To. You.

– gottie

Footnotes

1. This revelation made me pay a bit more attention to the other IP addresses used, so I checked the location of the IP address that was documented as being used by @lillyletters – you know, @silentwakes’ sockpuppet.
It matched up with Rob’s parents’ address in LA, which a commenter tracked down for me in one of the previous chapters. So that definitively proves that it was him, if you needed more evidence there. (Should have got a VPN, Rob!!)

Anonymous wait….so its all real, then? rob clearly wants you to stop posting. You didn’t make that bit up, even if he never stole your laptop. I don’t….know what to think anymore

Anonymous I think its all real.

Anonymous I’m so sorry, gottie. I was one of the ones that didn’t believe you. I’m shocked that you were telling the truth all along. I promise not to doubt you anymore.

Anonymous I’m really confused. This stuff really happened? I thought gottie made everything up?

LyraLessLovely I mean, there’s still ways gottie could have faked all this. But it’s becoming less and less likely. At least some part of this is real

Anonymous make sure your home is secure tonight. He’s already broken in once to retrieve a laptop – there’s a chance he could do it again.

Anonymous Hang on, hang on, hang on. This seems . . . really fishy to me. Why is he doing this?

Anonymous these comments in combination with the helpmepay stuff? it almost seems like he’s trying to fake an alibi….

gottiewrites I JUST GOT SHIVERS DOWN MY SPINE. What the hell is going on?

Anonymous I’m the anon from a while back that works at RBC. Just wanted to let you know that Nathan is definitely not filming loch & ness at the mo, as the daily mail correctly reports. I know you’ve got bigger fish to fry right now, but I wanted to provide corroboration of that. I don’t know all the details, but our execs have called for a short filming break. Not sure why but loch & ness will stay on schedule – filming is starting up again in a few weeks. Nathan is definitely still going to be in the show. I think hes just taking some time to himself for personal reasons for a few weeks

Anonymous I double-checked and this is the same IP as the other RBC employee comment we had a while back, so this is probably legitimate info

Anonymous did gottie scare Nathan away from work?

Anonymous lol, as much as she’d love to think it does, not everything in the world revolves around gottie ‘drama queen’ writes

Anonymous you know what I don’t understand? If rob knows she’s doing all this, and is reading this essay, why hasn’t he deleted all the emails in his account and changed the passwords and stuff? He could have stopped her getting the fundraiser emails from his inbox archive, at the very least.

RosaRodel yeah, I was wondering that too. Rob, where are youuuuu? We know you’re not filming loch and ness! What are you and nathan doing with all that free time?

Anonymous maybe gottie killed him.

Anonymous maybe he killed her and now he’s the one posting this essay!!!

krypto6661 what if gottie doesn’t exist and this is all a RBC stunt

  1. is it bad that i’ve only just noticed the court document parts included hints to what’s actually happening? *facepalm*.
based on that “new” information, rob definitely isn’t the victim as they’re already dead at this point. but that still leaves three main possibilities, nathan, anya, and gottie. the last one being so ridiculous that it c a n ‘ t be real. it would mean that anonymous message was right – rob killed gottie and the person posting this isn’t gottie anymore…
(i also think the guy rob was talking to was brad, i think brad is more important to the plot in someway)

  2. i rlly hope rob hasn’t killed anyone because he does seem so nice except in the silentwakes posts but i believe in people changing + also there was that conversation he had with someone else and he didn’t really seem at fault?
