Chapter 15 – Mistaken Unverified Claims
@gottiewrites 29/08/14
Now, someone mentioned in the comments on the last chapter that it might be possible I’ve been a bit short-sighted about @silentwakes’ attention-grabbing @lillyletters stunt.
To recap, very briefly: an account belonging to Rob back in 2010 made a crowdfunding plee, which he then claimed to have received a donation of $13,000. The account that made the donation turned out to have been made by Rob himself. In the backlash over this discovery, Rob left the fandom in disgrace.
I’d assumed that he claimed the sockpuppet had donated $13,000 to his crowdfunder as a way to gain followers. But someone pointed out that there could be real money involved. That hadn’t occurred to me at all.
I tried to track down the crowdfunder information, to see how much he’d really received. Since I still have Rob’s laptop, I might as well get all the information I can out of it.
Since Rob’s email inbox was logged in on his laptop, so I ran a search for any emails from the crowdfunding site HelpMePay, where he took donations back on that original blog post in 2010. There were a few small donations, like one from @effiemeral, for ten or fifteen dollars. Then there was this:
| Date | Donation by | Amount | OriginatingCurrency (1 bitcoin = $474.13) | Processing and Currency Conversion Charges (2.5%) | Net donation in USD |
| 17/09/10 | Lilly Fielden | 27.42 | Bitcoin | $325 | $12,675 |
I’m a bit confused, now. If the @lillyletters account is a sockpuppet, how can Lilly be a real person? Was it all real after all?
He really did receive a donation for $13,000, in a single payment from ‘Lilly Fielden’. But, here’s the clincher, I tried to track down a Lilly Fielden in California, and even Montana. There’s no one of the right age/marital status/ethnicity at all. She doesn’t exist!!!!!
*chefs kiss* This is the jackpot, guys. This is basically a big flashing red light saying ‘clue’. Suddenly, all of Rob’s attempts to conceal this from me have become clear. Because our good friend Rob seems to have gotten himself involved in an illegal racket.
Who would bother sending anyone some money using a fake name? That’s a significant amount of trouble to go to, isn’t it? And why did he get sent it in BITCOIN?
Back up a step, Gottie. What’s bitcoin?
Bitcoin, in case you’re unfamiliar, is a currency invented for anonymous use on the internet. It was created in 2009, and it’s still a very niche currency now, so for a middle-aged housewife to be sending donations from the currency in 2010 is incredibly unlikely. Clearly that money didn’t come from any legitimate source.
Because it’s so anonymous, Bitcoin is generally used to buy and sell things on the deep web – an anonymous area of the internet used by criminals where you can properly hide your identity. There’s no way to trace the transaction from here, if Lilly Fielden does in fact exist.
I have no idea what this means. But I’m going to find out, I promise you that.
Nathan’s work schedule
An interesting article was also posted in the Daily Mail today.
NATHAN O’DONNELL SKIPS OUT ON FILMING – LOCH & NESS S2 DELAYED AS SCHEDULE FALLS BEHIND 25/08/14
Has the fame got to his head? Nathan O’Donnell has been an A-lister less than a year, but he’s already shirking his duties in favour of living the high life. Set insiders at RBC report that the actor hasn’t turned up to film Loch & Ness in over a week. Producers are furious as the show is delayed without its lead actor. The new season is due to start airing in October – what does this mean for the release date?
Our source suggests that unless he gets his head on straight, O’Donnell may be written out of the series. ●
What is our boy up to?! This doesn’t sound like Nathan at all. What could he be doing that’s more important than filming the show? I don’t trust the Daily Mail at all, so this could be completely made up – or he’s ill and is taking a legitimate break to recover.
